How to choose an online casino

Five steps

1. Confirm the operator on the Gambling Commission's public register.
2. Decide what matters most: slots, live tables, a simple offer, fast withdrawals.
3. Compare casinos on that, not on an overall rank.
4. Read the welcome offer's wagering, deadline and payment rules.
5. Deposit the minimum and make one small withdrawal.

Why 'best overall' is the wrong question

An overall score averages things you may not care about. A live-table player gains nothing from a large slot library; someone who deposits £10 a month gains nothing from a £100 bonus ceiling. The casino that suits you is the one that leads on what you will use.

Two shortcuts

Sixteen awards name a winner for each common need, and the ranking tool lets you weigh the categories yourself.

What not to choose on

• The size of the bonus headline.
• A site's position in someone's top ten.
• A recent win you read about.
